How To Flange Stainless Steel Cylinders?

2026-06-19

Flanging stainless steel cylinders requires more than increasing hydraulic pressure. Stainless grades resist deformation, harden as they are worked, and spring back after the tool is removed. A stable process therefore depends on careful preparation, gradual forming, suitable radii, and accurate support throughout the cycle.

1. Inspect the Cylinder

Check diameter, height, wall thickness, roundness, seam condition, and edge squareness. Excessive weld buildup or an uneven cut line will produce different flange widths around the opening. Remove burrs and sharp notches because they can become crack starting points.

2. Select the Forming Radius

A tight radius concentrates strain at the bend line. Stainless steel usually needs a more generous radius than mild steel because of its greater resistance and rebound. The correct value depends on grade, temper, thickness, flange direction, and final geometry. Zhuosheng’s selection guidance also highlights the relationship between stainless steel, radius, and springback.

3. Support and Center the Workpiece

The rotating axis, clamping axis, and tool path must remain aligned. Thin-wall cylinders may need an internal mandrel or support ring. Larger diameters may need extra guides so the edge does not oscillate during rotation.

An Automatic Hydraulic Flanging Machine is useful when the process requires steady force and repeatable movement. Hydraulic control allows pressure and stroke to be adjusted for the actual wall thickness, while automatic sequencing reduces operator-to-operator variation. Zhuosheng describes hydraulic equipment designed to apply consistent force in sheet-metal flanging.

4. Form in Progressive Stages

Do not create the final angle in one aggressive movement. Begin with a pre-forming step, continue with one or more intermediate stages, and finish with a lighter calibration pass. This distributes strain and lowers the risk of splitting or severe thinning.

For outward flanges, monitor compression and waviness at the outer edge. For inward flanges, watch for material crowding and local buckling. During Stainless Steel Cylinder Flanging, the sequence should keep material flow uniform around the circumference.

Zhuosheng’s multifunctional hydraulic equipment includes a pre-bending function for stainless steel and stores forming configurations to reduce setup differences when workpieces change.

5. Control Friction and Temperature

Use a lubricant compatible with stainless forming and later cleaning, welding, or coating. Uneven lubrication creates uneven friction, which may appear as rough sectors or inconsistent flange dimensions.

Monitor temperature during long runs because heat can change lubrication behavior and accelerate galling.

6. Measure the Complete Edge

Inspection should include flange width, angle, opening diameter, roundness, minimum remaining thickness, surface condition, and cracks. For welded cylinders, compare measurements near the seam with those on the opposite side.

A capable Hydraulic Flanging Machine Supplier should request the drawing, stainless grade, thickness, diameter range, flange direction, finish standard, and planned output before proposing equipment. Trials should use representative cylinders and include warm-machine testing, not only one successful sample. Reliable flanging comes from moderate forming steps, rigid support, controlled pressure, and a measurable acceptance plan.
